A Debate Challenge to Jennifer Harbury: Is Israel committing ethnic cleansing in Gaza?
Renowned activist and attorney, Jennifer Harbury, recently spoke at an event billed as a “Palestine Solidarity Rally.” See and hear her full remarks above.
In her prepared speech, Harbury argued that the Israeli government was committing ethnic cleansing and genocide against the people of Gaza. I’ve interviewed Jennifer as a journalist and spoken alongside her as an activist, principally in defense of migrant rights. We’ve also had interesting sidebar discussions about international law, in particular the concept of universal jurisdiction. A co-author of Noam Chomsky, who I also know, Jennifer and I hail from the same political background and continuity. Which is why, as well as for all the reasons stated above, I believe it would be a service to the community for Jennifer and me to publicly debate and discuss this very grave matter today in global and U.S. affairs, especially because we have such diverging views. I do not believe the Israelis are committing genocide in Gaza.
Unlike the entirety of those who hold the same position as her, here in the Rio Grande Valley, Jennifer can actually articulate and formulate her stances logically and empirically. I disagree with her premises, but we can Socratically elucidate them.
We should have a structured debate, Jennifer, with a moderator and format, as well as a discussion period. Amy could possibly moderate it or anyone of your choosing. I’m fine with any venue, as long as it’s conducive to community and discussion.
Get in touch so we can plan and coordinate this. It’s much needed.
Jonathan
